How This Pip Value Calculator Works

Select your currency pair and lot type. Enter the number of lots you intend to trade. For JPY pairs, enter the current exchange rate so the calculator can convert pip value from JPY to USD. Results show pip value per lot, total pip value for your position, and a quick reference for all three lot sizes.

Pip Value Formula

For USD-quoted pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, etc.):
Pip Value = Lot Size ร— Pip Size

For USD-base pairs (USD/JPY, USD/CHF, etc.):
Pip Value = (Lot Size ร— Pip Size) รท Exchange Rate

Worked Example

3 mini lots of EUR/USD (pip size 0.0001):

  • Pip value per lot: 10,000 ร— 0.0001 = $1.00
  • Total pip value: 3 ร— $1.00 = $3.00 per pip
  • If your trade moves 25 pips: 25 ร— $3.00 = $75 profit or loss

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pip in forex?

A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest standardized price movement in a currency pair. For most pairs like EUR/USD, one pip equals 0.0001. For JPY pairs like USD/JPY, one pip equals 0.01. Pip value depends on your lot size and the current exchange rate.

How is pip value calculated in forex?

Pip Value = Lot Size ร— Pip Size. For EUR/USD with a standard lot (100,000 units) and pip size 0.0001: pip value = 100,000 ร— 0.0001 = $10. For a mini lot (10,000 units): $1. For a micro lot (1,000 units): $0.10. The formula is the same for all USD-quoted pairs.

What is the pip value for USD/JPY?

For USD/JPY, the pip size is 0.01 (not 0.0001). Standard lot pip value = 100,000 ร— 0.01 = 1,000 JPY. To convert to USD, divide by the current USD/JPY rate. At 150.00: $1,000 JPY / 150 = approximately $6.67 per pip for a standard lot.

Does pip value change as the exchange rate changes?

For pairs where USD is the quote currency (EUR/USD, GBP/USD), pip value in USD is fixed regardless of the exchange rate. For pairs where USD is the base currency (USD/JPY, USD/CAD), pip value in USD changes as the rate moves because it requires a conversion.

What is the pip value for a micro lot?

For a micro lot (1,000 units) of EUR/USD: 1,000 ร— 0.0001 = $0.10 per pip. For GBP/USD micro lot: also $0.10 per pip. For USD/JPY micro lot at 150.00: approximately $0.067 per pip. Micro lots are ideal for traders managing small accounts.

How do I use pip value to calculate my risk?

Dollar Risk = Stop Loss (pips) ร— Pip Value ร— Number of Lots. If your stop is 20 pips and you trade 2 mini lots of EUR/USD (pip value $1 each): dollar risk = 20 ร— $1 ร— 2 = $40. Use this to size positions so dollar risk stays within your 1โ€“2% account rule.

What is a pipette in forex?

A pipette is 1/10th of a pip, also called a fractional pip. For EUR/USD, one pipette equals 0.00001. Most modern brokers quote prices to 5 decimal places (or 3 for JPY pairs). Pipettes improve precision but the standard pip remains the main unit for calculating risk.

Does pip value differ between brokers?

Pip value calculations are universal โ€” they depend only on lot size, pip size, and exchange rate. However, some brokers calculate in the account currency (USD, EUR, GBP, etc.), so the displayed pip value may differ if your account is not in USD. This calculator shows USD pip values.
